See US History Being Made!
The Pan-American Exposition, staged in Buffalo, New York, presented a microcosm all of the trends, developments, innovations, and attitudes that would define the start of America's greatest century. The colorful buildings along the Grand Canal, built in ersatz Spanish colonial style, symbolized American Manifest Destiny over the hemisphere. The amazing Electric Tower announced to the world the nation's technical superiority.
McKinley was known as a decisive president who put America on the road to world power. McKinley's difficult foreign policy decisions, especially his policy toward China and his decision to go to war with Spain over Cuban independence, helped the U.S. enter the twentieth century as a new and powerful developing empire on the world stage.

A Trip Around The Pan-American Exposition
Before the tragic assassination, film crews had descended on Buffalo, NY to film the doomed Pan American Exposition. On this track you are given a broad overview of the exposition and festivities that were underway. The entire film was photographed from an excursion vessel traveling through the waterways surrounding the festival.
The Grand Canal was built for tourists to have a tireless view of the exterior of the buildings of the Pan-American Exposition. It was over a mile long and extended around the central group of large buildings. The electric launches which make the trip around the exposition represent the peak of luxury and elegance. Romantic bridges span the waterway at well-located points; statuary placed everywhere add to the striking effect.

President McKinley's Funeral Cortege In Buffalo, NY
The filmmakers in this next track experimented with their new medium by shooting and filming the state funeral from several different angles. First we see shots over the heads of the crowd that lined the street watching the cortege begin. Mounted police are seen before the escort for the funeral procession. The next camera angle is from the other side and shows various military groups including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and the Army and Naval Academy cadets. Another camera position shows McKinley's immediate family in their carriages preceding the hearse. The next camera position, high above the heads of the people, is in front of the building where the memorial services were held. It shows the hearse and the casket being removed and taken on the shoulders of the pallbearers up the steps of the church. The last scene shows huge groups of people leaving the memorial services.

Sham Battle At the Pan-American Exposition
This track brings back a little bit of history that would be bizarre to see reenacted today. At the Pan American Exposition, large arches and columns are seen surrounding a flat field. In front of the field, American Indians on horseback ride toward the camera. The Indians are wearing feathers, war paint, and are carrying frontier rifles across the bare backs of their horses. In the middle of this flat area, men dressed as U.S. Army troops in battle insignia are lined up to kill the Indians. They fire at the Indians, who gallop by. The troops move over this flat area while the Indians on horseback circle them. There is then a mock Indian battle.
