History of World War I - America Goes Over DVD

History of World War I - America Goes Over DVD

Witness live action from the first global conflict - World War I and the unflagging commitment of American troops as they march across Europe in their endeavor to make the world safe for democracy!

Never had so many nations taken up arms in a single war as they did during World war I or the Great War as it was called by contemporaries. Never had so many bloody battles been fought in such gruesome manner.

The war, which lasted four years between 1914 and 1918, was the first man-made catastrophe of the 20th century. The reasons for the war though, continue to baffle scholars. Some vouch that it was desire for territorial conquest, while others argue that it the massive arms race triggered by Germany that was responsible for the war. It is safe to conclude that it was a combination of these and other reasons that precipitated war.

Never before had tanks, planes and chemical weapons been used to destroy human life and property as was witnessed during the Great War. Predictably, Europe’s powers soon took sides and faced each other- Russia, France and Britain on one side and the triad of Germany, Turkey and France on the other. Eventually, the War spread beyond Europe as the warring continent turned to its colonies and friends for help. This included the United States, which joined the War in 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to "make the world safe for democracy."

This DVD captures the American war effort from the historic declaration of war by president Wilson to battlefields of Europe in a simple yet comprehensive manner.

EDITORIAL REVIEW:

Germany’s unprovoked attack on American shipping accelerated America’s entry into World War I. This historic and captivating DVD is a delightful record of America’s contribution to the Great War. The lack of narration is more than compensated for the humorous posters and titles, which keep you informed about scenes that follow. The fact that the Americans troops were seldom short on humor is quite evident in these charmingly designed title pages. Puns are used generously and shots of troops clowning around during breaks are also used to break the monotony of a long march. The huge pile of bread in one scene is suggestive of the roles the cooks and other non-combat troops played in the war effort. On the flip side you have the heart-wrenching scenes of the dead and wounded and cities reduced to ruins by continual shelling.

The vivid images and insightful handling of the camera belie the fact that the films on this DVD were produced almost a century ago. It is a wonderful record of the Great War and will certainly be cherished by all history buffs whenever they choose to spend a fruitful hour in examining the contents on this wonderful DVD.

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS:

"I could never understand why nations chose to go to war, but this DVD helped me understand that once in a while a nation has to rise to defend its people and its principles. I wonder how so many young people in the U.S. signed up for the war. I really admire their courage and patriotism. The clips are just great and lively despite the seriousness of the situation. Great DVD."
