History of World War II - Germany Destroyed! DVD

History of World War II - Germany Destroyed! DVD

The post World War II era was a challenging time for America. Planners were looking for ways to repair and reconstruct the very country, which their bombers had laid waste only a few months ago! The wheels of German industry had come to a standstill and they had to set them rolling again! Witness how this was done on this rare, amazing and historic DVD!

Half way through World War II, the United States Army Air Force began its own bombing missions over Germany. While the Royal Air Force relied on the cover of darkness to carry out its aerial raids the USAAF preferred to attack by daylight, claiming greater accuracy and lesser threat to civilians. Although both strategies had their advantages and problems, the overall impact of this relentless pounding of German cities and industries had a telling effect on the outcome of the war.

Strangely, Germany retaliated initially by increasing industrial production, but the sheer tonnage of explosive delivered by day and by night was eventually sufficient to cause widespread damage, and, more importantly from a military point of view, force Germany to divert resources to counter it. This was to be the real significance of the Allied strategic bombing campaign - resource allocation.

The twin campaigns - the US by day, the Commonwealth by night - built up into massive bombing of German industrial areas, notably the Ruhr followed by attacks directly on cities such as Hamburg and the more often-criticized bombing of Dresden. Albert Speer, Hitler’s Minister of Industries, has gone on record to admit that the bombing caused crucial production problems particularly on Germany’s ambitious U-Boat industry. For three years Allied bombers systematically bombed industrial plants and cities all over the Reich, reducing much of urban Germany to rubble.

This DVD presents some graphic images of German cities after the war and recounts the immense damage done to German industry. It also records the efforts of the United States to put Germany’s industry back on the tracks.

Post War Germany: 28 Months After V-E Day
This film investigates the ravages of the war on Germany, especially on industry. With more than half the country laid waste by allied bombing, Germany’s once thriving war industry had almost ground to a halt. The Weirton Steel Company, which produced this film, intends to take stock and furnish remedial measures for reviving the industry. You will see extensive footage of the havoc caused by allied bombers and some pathetic scenes of hungry citizens queuing up for fruits and other rations. The once regal mansions once owned and occupied by high-ranking officials in Hitler’s army wear a forlorn look, and symbolize the passing of an era.

EDITORIAL REVIEW :

Hardly had the smoke from the last gun battle cleared and the dust from the heap of rubble created by allied bombing settled, before the United Sates took stock of the situation in defeated Germany. While the cities and towns were damaged as badly as the industry, the efforts at reconstruction of Germany were focused on the industrial front.

This DVD presents a series of absorbing images of the immense damage cased to Germany’s cities and industry by the unrelenting bombardment carried out by allied forces. It examines the status of industry and the plans made to reconstruct it. These films also capture the resolve of German people to rebuild their nation. Piles of rubble and long queues of people for food rations underline the plight of the once proud nation. The images of abandoned mansions once occupied by the elite in Hitler’s army paint a gloomy picture of a bygone era.

The last clip delightfully records the successful rebuilding of industry. This is evidenced by the happy lives of German industrial workers showcased here.

The lack of narration in the first film is more than made up for by the excellent quality of pictures you will witness. The fact that most of the films were sponsored and produced by an industry is apparent in the insightful handling of the subject.

As the roar of allied bombers faded away over the horizon, the once booming German industry fell silent, and it was now up to the Americans to take stock and set the wheels in motion again. This DVD gives you a first hand account of the immense challenges, which confronted planners and records the happy result of their success!

CUSTOMER'S REVIEWS :

"I agree that the devastation of German cities was near complete and that the planners had a difficult task in rebuilding Germany. It is clear from the clips shown in this DVD that and from the Germany I visited a few years ago that the steps taken by planners were in the right direction. The images of people waiting in long queues for fruits and other essentials are a fear cry from the booming commercial districts you witness in Germany today. I appreciate the efforts put in by companies like the Weirton Steel Company to produce this historic footage."

"I was a bombardier in one of the squadrons that saw action over Germany. I was left with mixed feelings after viewing this DVD - happiness over a job well done and remorse over the loss of life and property that resulted. I am happy that the war ended as soon as it did and was delighted to learn from one of the films on this DVD that life in Germany soon returned to near normal because of the efforts of the American government."
